Russia tries to compete with PlayStation and Xbox

A little less than a year after Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed his government to develop gaming consoles, officials involved in the project have acknowledged that the devices will not be able to compete with major players like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, as reported by Techspot. One of the devices runs on Russia's homegrown Elbrus processor, but its performance is considered subpar, while the other resembles a Fire Stick knockoff designed to stream games from the cloud, priced at $45.
"I hope my colleagues approach this task with full responsibility and create something truly innovative," said Anton Gorelkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, in a Telegram post.
He acknowledged that the Elbrus processors are not yet advanced enough to rival the PS5 and Xbox, meaning the solution must be unconventional. Gorelkin also emphasized that the goal is not simply to port old games, but to promote and popularize domestic video game products and the industry within Russia.
The announcement sparked reactions on social media, with many users expressing surprise or mocking Putin's initiative. One user remarked, "I remember hearing Russia was making its own console, but I didn’t expect them to actually do it." Another joked, "The Putindo is going to be a wild collector's item in a few decades." A third commented, "It’s even funnier knowing it wasn’t a Russian tech company saying 'We can totally do that,' but rather Putin ordering the development of a Russian game console."
In March of the previous year, following a meeting on the socio-economic development of the Kaliningrad region, Putin issued the order for the development of these consoles, along with a "special operating system and a cloud system for delivering games and programs to users," according to a report by RT. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin was appointed to oversee the project, with a deadline set for June 15, 2024.
The need for domestically developed consoles arose after major video game companies, including Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, halted official sales to Russia in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
